Large Coffee Table Transformation

We purchased a large coffee table from an auction house where we buy a lot of furniture. It was solid wood with dents and scratches, so we knew we could make it look great!

Here it is with all of those dent, scratches and discoloration on the sides and top, but that was what made it so appealing to redo.

Ooh, all that worn wood on the top. Many people might sand it down and restain it, but we love using chalk paint and distressing it ourselves.

We used this matte cottage white paint to make our chalk paint. We found the recipe we use on Pinterest. We tried a couple recipes with varying ingredients until we came upon the one with calcium carbonate. We like it best. One thing we found that helps the most is to mix the water and calcium carbonate together first THEN add the paint in. It makes it “smoother” if that makes sense.

The unevenness on the top made it pop when it was sanded down. We used 120 grit sandpaper to do this.

Same with the legs.

Those bulky legs are just so awesome.

This is the poly acrylic that we used to seal the table. We put two coats on the entire piece.

Oh it turned out so good.

We just love it! Hope you think so too!

I’m interested in knowing why turn it into chalk paint if you sealed it? Why not just use the paint as is?

Have you ever had a problem with the Minwax Polycrylic Water base sealer turning yellow over time?
