Cait from gave an old, discarded dresser a truly amazing makeover by repurposing it into a bookshelf with Peacoat, Hemp Oil, and Natural Wax!
This is the ultimate trash to treasure piece! Several months ago my hubby and I were driving in town and I saw this piece on someone’s front lawn. I made him turn around so I could get a better look at it, but it’s a huge piece and we were in my car – not going to happen! I have the sweetest hubby – when we got home he went back with his truck, knocked on the lady’s door and scooped up this piece for free! Isn’t he the best?!

It was rickety and not in great shape (it has boatloads of dings and dents!) but had such potential and I knew exactly what I wanted to do to it. It sat for several months in the back of the workshop before I could get to it, but I knew I ultimately wanted to use it in our family office. With a little TLC and a good clean, I removed the plank shelves and painted the entire piece in Peacoat – the perfect navy! I sanded the plank shelf boards and stained them.
I distressed the piece around the edges and then gave it a coat of hemp oil. This piece had no previous finish on it so hemp oil was the perfect topcoat to start with as it will absorb right into the wood and protect it from the inside out. After removing the excess and letting it dry I followed up with a coat of wax.
I added some pretty knobs and this shelf ultimately will hold a ton of books and store all those office things that we all need but aren’t so pretty! I aboslutely love this colour and I think it looks perfect on this not so perfect piece!
