Patriotic Bluebird House Project

Fall and winter are a great time to build bluebird houses for the coming spring. I added a patriotic flair to these bluebird houses. These are great projects that will help you enjoy your backyard birds and help the environment.
Choose a great wood. I used some oak I had laying around the shop, but cedar and cypress also make great building materials for bird houses. You can get both cedar and red oak at your local home improvement stores.
Make your cuts using whatever saw you have on hand. I have a chop saw, but you could also get by with a jig saw.

Drill the correct size hole for the bluebird house. You'll need a 1.5 inch diameter hole for bluebirds. Use a Forstner bit or a spade bit to drill the hole.
Assemble the bird house either using brad nails or wood screws. I have an electric brad nailer that I used. I also glued the boards, using wood glue. The quick grip clamps came in real handy for clamping and holding the bird house while I assembled it.
Paint the bird house using a non-toxic, exterior paint. You don't need to paint the inside. I'm using bright colors here, but the birds probably prefer more neutral colors or colors that will help them blend into the environment. But feel free to add your creative twist.
Finished bird houses. Please check out my blog post to get free plans and more detailed instructions for this project. I also provide some tips on where to place the blue bird house in your yard. Enjoy!
