Good luck!!!!! unless you get every piece of root it's near impossible to get rid of, the more you kill off tops the more it spreads under ground unless you get every rhizome/tuber under ground(impossible)......landscapers used to say to best way to be rid of it is move. This is so hard to eliminate Round-Up full strength concentrate not diluted doesn't always work, unless you do it repeatedly & repeatedly. Here's plant info. http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7432.html

Sugar probably won't work & will kill other surrounding plants. You can try Round-Up. It won't kill anything you don't want it to as long as you put spray nozzle on the plant you are trying to kill.Contain the spray! Round-Up works by spraying leaves of plant it's then absorbed into plant thru leaves down into root system. The trick to doing any of the sedges is to spray the new light green leaves this is it's early growing stage and leaves have not hardened off(when hardened they do not absorb spray very well). Get concentrate not pre-mixed Use 1/2 roundup&1/2 water need it strong to kill whole tuber in ground. Follow safety instructs on bottle-wear gloves.do not use in wind, hold spray nozzle on plant you want to kill, do not walk in wet solution. Dying it with food coloring added to sprayer helps to see where it's going.Repeat as soon as you see any baby plants, lighter green leaves beginning.

Round-Up also comes in a jug that gives you a choice between spray and foam. The foam is easy to work with and get exactly where you want out without getting it on anything else. The cancer danger everyone talks about is being really blown up, it is actually only a problem with people who do landscaping for a living for years and no precautions are taken with daily use. Use gloves and you should be safe. It takes more often treatment than I want to do, so I just hand pull the grasses and other root born weeds that crop up in my gardens.
