Hi Linda, The only way to keep weeds away or rather easier to remove isto lay weed suppressant membrane and cut a cross in the membrane to place the plants in then fold the membrane back and cover the area with Gravel.........Best of luck!

You could always try preen. It puts a barrier down so weed seeds can't germinate ~ any seeds for that matter. It comes with or without fertilizer in a shaker container.
