Add Brick Pavers Over a Concrete Walkway
I wanted to add some curb appeal to our front steps, so I added some brick pavers over my existing concrete pathway...yes, that's right...OVER the existing sidewalk.
Here is what our walkway looked like before...boring beat up concrete.
First, I roughly laid out the brick pattern I would use.
Then I mixed grout up in a bucket. Make sure to use exterior grade grout.
Then I started to lay the grout with a thinly notched trowel. Then I put a small amount of grout on each brick and spacers in between them. I pressed them all into place.
When I needed to cut bricks, I used a wet tile saw to do so.
Once the grout and bricks were fixed into place, I used a float and added grout to the top of the bricks. To avoid grout haze, you could use an icing-like bag and just apply grout in the cracks.
Here is the walkway partially finished! Next I used steel wool to remove as much of the grout haze as possible.
Beautiful photo of the after!
I say worth it!

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
I would like to do this or something like this but shoveling snow on uneven paver sidewalks in Michigan winters is not in the cards. Does Anyone have a suggestion of what could be an alternative for raising sidewalks ?
Are you using grout or mortar to set the bricks??
I love this idea but how did you level it with the ground? I don't want to create a trilling hazard.
