How do I take dark wood kitchen cabinets to light wood stain?
I have 1974 dark wood kitchen cabinets. I would like a much lighter, brighter color of stain to lighten up the dark kitchen. I know I could go the "paint them white" route, but I love wood grain and really hate to cover it up completely.
Suggestions, please.
Links to sources, etc. appreciated.

Lighter stain over dark will not work. You can white wash them. A 50/50 mix of white or light colored paint. Use a brush with a light touch to paint. Don't load too much paint mixture on the brush. Use a cloth to remove some of the paint and blend if needed.

Hello! I have not personally done this project. But I found the bloggers link very interesting. It seems to be a nice white cabinet refurb. This not a light wood stain unfortunately.
It might be helpful to review.
Will-dig further for lighting projects
Hope this helps!

Do your 1974 cupboards have a solid wood finish, veneer, or laminate finish?
There a ton of colors of stain in blues, greens etc. Unfortunately there is no way to lighten them an change to another color stain until you sand them all done. A major job, but doable. Check online I have seen ALL sorts of cool colors other than brown that will show the woodgrain.
You will need to strip off the dark stain and see what type of wood you have. If it's a lighter wood, you can use a clear coat or a light stain on it.
You would need to strip using a stripper that says it removes stain, this in the more toxic Kleen-Strip making sure to ventilate very well and put fans in with all windows and doors open. Wear chemical gloves, googles and a mask cause this stuff burns. Best to strip most it outside in the garage. Use steel wool to remove the stain after an initial scrape to remove the varnish and first layer of stain.
Be sure to make a chart and number all cabinet doors and drawers to you can return them to the right area.
Then if the wood is still stained, you may have to use wood bleach to get it really light.
Once light enough to accept your lighter stain. Stain it. Then use water-based poly in the finish you like, satin is my fav.
Hello. Alternatively here’s another solution strategy to consider looking over. Hope this helps

You will need to sand and restain if that if you want to see the wood grain. The colors of stains they make now are amazing.
You will need to remove the finish and sand them. This may not be possible, depending on type of door construction you have. Once you have them sanded and cleaned, you can then stain them any shade from there.

You could paint them then paint them with the wood grain on them they sell the painting tool to do that it looks cool home depot
Depends on the wood, if its cherry won’t be light it has to be oak or pine.
Unfortunately the only way to get a lighter stain on darker cabinets is to completely sand them thoroughly to remove the old stain. Most strippers don't remove stain either, just paint, including strippers that say they remove stain.
Hello, Rub them down to base wood and use a coloured wax.
