This may not answer your question directly, but I've used steel wool soaked in vinegar until it dissolves. Additionally, I've also used coffee to age/distress wood.

Hi! One method I've tried involves putting steel in vinegar so that it oxidizes. It did create a brownish tint, but, not enough for my project. I ended up using a purchased stain. Good luck!
