they usually go by the age of the home to determine this
The way if there is asbestos in your popcorn ceiling is usually related to the age of the house . Here is a link to Amazon test kits to determine if your has asbestos:

Any ceiling installed before 1978 probably has asbestos and even up to 1986. Here's a link:

You have to remove a small section and test it. If you know when it was installed, that can help guide you. Those pre-1980's have a high probability.
After asbestos was mostly banned in 1978, popcorn ceilings were made with paper fiber. However, suppliers were allowed to legally sell their existing inventory of asbestos-containing products. Because of this, popcorn ceilings were installed in homes into the mid-1980s.
If your property has popcorn ceilings and was built or renovated between 1920-1985, there is a good chance that your ceiling contains asbestos. While these fibers are generally harmless while undisturbed, natural disasters, wear and tear, and construction projects can all cause the fibers to go airborne – leaving those in the vicinity at risk for mesothelioma cancer and worse.
If your ceiling contains popcorn ceiling tiles, you can look for an item number or company information for the ceiling tile. You should be able to get information about that batch of tiles to determine if asbestos was used in their construction, as companies are legally required to disclose previous use of asbestos.
Unfortunately, for a simple spray-on coating, you don’t have this luxury. There is no way to tell if your ceiling contains asbestos without official testing – so then the question becomes how to test popcorn ceiling for asbestos!
You can buy test kits to test a small sample. If the ceiling was popcorned prior to 1980 it more likely has asbestos in it. If it does do not remove it yourself. A company that removes asbestos is licensed and certified to be able to remove it and properly dispose of it. You con cover a popcorn ceiling with asbestos to prevent any flaking or asbestos getting into the air. It's called "encapsulation". When I was in business my crew would cover popcorn ceilings with 1/4" drywall made for popcorn ceilings with asbestos. Eventually we used it for all popcorn ceilings rather than scraping off or skim coating. Less work time, mess and savings for homeowners.

Not all Popcorn ceilings have Asbestos. But, it is literally impossible to tell if your ceiling does or not without getting it tested by an accredited lab. Asbestos is made of microscopic fibers which become airborne when disturbed. Hold up a zip lock baggy and scrape some off into the bag. Not a lot, but about a good tablespoons worth. They need enough to test.
zip lock it and take it over to your local testing lab. Charge is about $50 and they can email you the results in about a day or two.
Hi Linda, you can get asbestos testing kits on Amazon. Here's one example - https://www.amazon.com/Asbestos-Test-Bus-Days-Schneider/dp/B008J3ZK8M
I would get it tested.
You can get an at home testing kit: https://amzn.to/3FYLGj6
Go to Home Depot and get a test kit and scrap a piece off and test the piece you took off .if it’s positive you need a professional to remove it.
Lowes, Home Depot and Amazon make testing kits for asbestos.
If it is the spray on popcorn ceiling then it shouldnt have asbestos. If it is the old ceiling tiles then they might... Get ahold of any restoration company and they can help you out
I’d pick up a test kit or have a pro come by to assess.
It is said that if a home was built before the mid-1980s, there is a possibility that your popcorn ceiling has asbestos in it. I personally think that the best way to determine if asbestos is present is to have your ceiling professionally tested.M
