I wanted to cheer up my patio space and colour and pattern feature quite a lot in achieving this . I have lots of little bits of glass tile and mosaic bits that aren’t enough for a big project but thought I could make a piece of hanging art suitable for the space with them. I use cement backing board cut to a squarish size and begin drawing circles with pencil using pots and things around to get template.

Draw circle

I like mixes of colour and shape and decide on a black centre tile and glue with PVA coloured vitreous glass tiles in various shapes.

Sticking tiles

Building up the pattern is mindful and so satisfying that you can’t worry or stress it’s just a lovely activity to keep you in the moment.

Adding tiles

When all the tiles and border are in place it’s time to grout!

Mix grout powder with water and colour acrylic paint to a nice paste.

Grouting

Once design is finished and tiles have had an overnight chance to stick well to board it’s time to grout.

I mix a dark grey grout compatible to outdoor use and spread over the design and work it into the crevices.

Once it’s well covered and edges grouted too it’s time for wiping off excess and cleaning it up for big reveal!
