Make a Bee Water Station From Dollar Store Finds

Bees need water, especially in suburban areas. Forager bees seek water sources, drink, and store water in sacs on their legs, flying it back to the house bees at the hive. They find water based on smell, and tend to be attracted to chlorine (like in a swimming pool) which is not good for them. By making this cute little bee watering station, you can give them fresh, potable water and add a pretty ornament to your garden -- all under $5.

Honey bees forage for pollen and water for the hive. Water is critical to their survival. They find water by scent, rather than by sight, and can be attracted to unhealthy water sources.

You can make this cute bee watering station from dollar store finds. Buy a large glass plate, a glass bowl, and the stones in your favorite colors. Find a piece of rebar or a dowel that fits inside an empty wine bottle. I used an old port bottle here, but you can also buy bottles at craft stores or the dollar store.

Assemble the base. Clean all labels off of the plates and bottle with soap and water. Test the rebar or dowel to make sure it slides into the opening of the bottle easily. If it does not, find a slimmer dowel or rod to hold your ornament in place. Place the bowl, open side down, on a table. Spread the bottom with glue. Then carefully place the plate, top side against the glue. Let dry about an hour. Then, glue the bottom of the wine bottle to the plate as shown.

I also glued colorful large, flat stones around the rim for decoration. You can add more or leave them off if you like.

Hammer in the dowel or stake where you want it in the garden. Then, once the glue has thoroughly dried, slide the opening of the bottle over the dowel.

Pour the flat bottom stones into the bowl first, then the bag of round marble stones. Add a bit off moss and water to the top, leaving the edges of the stones above water. Voila! Instant bee waterer!

I am definitely going to make this. Bee population is on the wane and this project is a winner.
