Sponge-painted Accent Wall

I was tired of looking at my boring, white entry way, so one weekend I decided to change all that. I did not want to spend money on wallpaper or other wall treatments, so I decided to give the popular sponge paint method a try. I already had the paint and sponge on hand so this update was free for me!

First, I took down the wall art and wiped the walls down with a damp rag to get rid of any dust.

Decide on a pattern

Since this was my first try, I went with a simple pattern. I used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and cut the corners off, so my design would not be a perfect rectangle.

I poured some paint in a paper plate, then practiced on a scrap envelope before I started on the wall.

Sponge-painting the design

I decided to only go halfway up the wall to mimic the height of the coat rack on the opposite side of the wall. I placed a piece of painters tape at the top of my area to help keep my lines straight.

I literally just eyeballed the spacing, but you could be more precise by measuring and drawing faint lines to achieve a more precise pattern.

The trick is to dab your sponge on the plate after loading the paint, so you do not get globs or drips. It also makes the pattern a little more organic and imperfect.

Here is what a large section looks like. Since I eyeballed it, the spacing is not perfect, but that is OK with me!

I found a mirror at Goodwill and decided to hang it in the center of the wall instead of putting the artwork back up.

This accent wall was so easy and only took me about 15 minutes to complete. The best part is I can paint over it when I get tired of it! You may notice that I also painted the door while I was at it. These two quick projects made such a big impact for no money since I already had the paint!

The link to the door paint shows a purple color. What is the correct color name and brand? 😍😍😍

I really like this. Spacing is not critical. A lot of wallpaper with similar designs are random. This would be great for a girls or boys room. Just use different random colors or colors they like. Teens can even lend a hand and call it their own.

It turned out so well!! I can't believe you used a magic eraser to make the pattern. Genius! I want to try this on my bathroom wall!
