Tulips for April in Pennsylvania
by

Spring is in overdrive here in Pennsylvania! The weather has been sunny, in the 60's, and we just had a few nice days of saturating rain last week. The plants are zooming ahead to catch up to their normal April schedule, which was delayed this year.

Julie @ Wife, Mother, Gardener on Apr 23, 2013Thanks Doug & Heather! The Persian Pearls are diminutive beauties... very nice with Narcissus 'Tete-e-tete' also. T John- Tulips usually start forming roots over the winter, so it is better to have them at least potted for the winter months. In zone 4, you would want to store your tulip pots in a garage or outbuilding for the coldest part of winter. (I have ruined bulb pots outside due to extreme cold and thick ice in my zone 5). Bring them out into the sunlight when the weather gets into the 20's and 30's again (usually March). You could plant them out then in April or just enjoy them in their pots. The Ice Stick tulips are extremely hardy and bloom very early (often when the crocuses are up), and often returned to bloom for many years in my area. Another idea is planting them out in fall and adding course grit to the planting holes. It may not work, but if your critters are not too determined, it might do wonders!

Douglas Hunt on Apr 24, 2013T Johns, squirrels and voles don't tend to bother daffodils bulbs, or alliums. You can plant tulips and other things they find more tasty in a "bulb cage" made from chicken wire.
