I was curious to see what would happen if you took a printout and drilled holes through it on some plywood. Would you be able to see the illustration image afterwards? It ended up being a day time decor piece, that completely changes at night.

Check out the video above. I added some IKEA LED lights to the back, so that it lights up at night (you can also see the lion's face during the day).
Not many steps in this DIY
All you need is a 1) print out of an illustration (I found my online and had it printed at the printers as a cheap 'blueprint/plotter print' A1 size) 2) a sheet of plywood the size of your print out, and 3) different sized drill bits
I ended up only using 3 different sized drill bits
There was no real planning. I just used the biggest drill bit on the thickest parts of the illustration, and worked my way from there. I did use the smaller drill bits for the more important parts of the illustration (nose, mouth, eyes) to get more details out of the graphic.
All drilled
You can leave it as is, or I put 2 coats of polyurethane to gloss it a bit.
A day time and night time decor piece

Phillipcardjr on Apr 20, 2016Nice work. Looks sharp with the lights behind it. Scroll saw patterns might prove worthwhile. The outlines / patterns are available in a variety of sizes and prices are not bad, if you take into account the run around time ,saved. I was just looking through a scroll saw catalog for another kind of application,as to why it came to mind with your drill project.
