A Reel-y Retro Chalkboard Frame: Repurposed Vintage Movie Reel

2 Materials
Hi there, Hometalk Friends! One of the best things about thrifting is the challenge it offers to repurpose vintage finds as functional decor with character. Today I'm sharing one of my latest projects...
When I came across this old movie reel, I was instantly drawn to it. I envisioned a funky chalkboard frame to commemorate my Grand's upcoming birthday. The reel's design would allow space for photos and chalkboard captions. Find it here!

I started by giving the reel a coat of chalk paint.

Once it dried, I gave it a light distressing with fine grit sandpaper. Next, I used the reel to trace the shape onto 4 pieces of cardboard.

I used the cardboard for photo backings and mini chalkboards.
I attached 4" x 6" photos to two of the cardboard shapes with photo adhesive squares. I chose vertical shots for the side sections but horizontal shots could be used for the top and bottom. For the chalkboard sections, I used chalkboard stick on paper. Find it here!
I thought vintage song lyrics were fitting for the photo captions. I wrote "You oughta be in pictures" and "You're wonderful to see" on the mini chalkboards. I smile each time I walk by my "new" frame featuring my Little Star.

You could do this with rim covers, thou those would stand out on the wall a bit further but if you can get a low profile set then it would work I am sure. Plus if you use those you get 2 to 4 in a package and they are like $10 bucks and up. I would love to try this using the wheel covers and have a cluster of them together. I think it would look cool all of them together..... wonder if anyone else had this idea and if so did you do it so I can see it?
