A boy's room makeover for a "Little Gentleman" for under $300. Madras Print, Union Jack, Stripes, and Framed Bowties. Includes 5 DIY Art ideas that I created that were under $TOTAL!
We took a plain, boring white room and turned it into a colorful, fun room with a style he can grow up with. I will say we were lucky enough to get the furniture as GREAT hand-me downs, so we saved a lot there. The "curtains" are actually $20 twin duvets from Target that I hung from clips. I bought a plain clearance rug from Lowes and I hand painted the Union Jack on it using painters tape, and leftover wall paint. On the wall I framed paper "bowties" I made from $2 of scrapbook paper. The galvanized bucket from Target holds his toys.
Here is the Mood Board I created for his "Little Gentleman" themed room.
We wanted a room that he could grow into and not feel too "baby-ish" in a couple of years. I painted the walls a bright blue, and then added blue, navy, and red stripes to one wall. To decorate the walls, I created five different types of artwork, ALL for under $3! (not including the frames). #1 The red frames contain Mr. Potato Head (his favorite toy) industrial prototype drawings. I found them for free online and printed them off on my home printer. You can look up such drawings for your child's favorite toys too. #2 I drew the sketch above his bed on a piece of white cardstock and a black Sharpie. Its a simple sketch of a hand giving the "peace sign" #3 The "bowties" are made from scrapbook paper, the material cost $2. Then I framed in inexpensive frames ($5/ea). See #4 and #5 below!
This is a close up of my DIY Art project the Mr. Potato Head prototype drawings.
The bedding was almost half the budget, from Pottery Barn Kids! But I couldn't find a madras print that I loved more. The stripes were hand painted on the wall for an inexpensive accent. The photo on the bedside table is a special photo of his sister and him at the beach, and as artwork it cost less than a dollar to print. The striped "curtains" are Target twin sized duvets hung from clips.
This is more of the Union Jack rug that I created for less than $20 by painting the stripes onto a plain outdoor rug. For artwork to fill up a blank wall, I found a piece of scrap plywood and cut out a giant "K" for his monogram, and painted it with leftover wall paint. This ended up being a totally FREE project. So there you go: 5 DIY ideas that cost less than $3 total.
Here was the "before" of his room, as you can tell it was a boring, white box.
