Want to learn how to make super easy farmhouse shutters? This project is super effortless and easy. Anyone can do them. If you have been a following my blog, you know I love imperfect and uneven decor. I love to mix it with modern pieces to create the coziest home decor. I made these shutters about six months ago but the place I made them for they didn't quite work. I recently stumbled upon these amazing pink chairs, see the redo here, and they have made me revaluate my room. I love color. But when there are too many colors fighting for attention I go a bit crazy. I love blues and greys and I had quite a bit in my living room. The existing shutters were a dark grey-blue and although I adored them.. they totally clashed with my pink chairs! Something needed to change, and then I remembered I had these old shutters. Cue in a big smiley heart.

Aren't they the prettiest? But with my pink chairs I felt like I was living in a bubble gum factory. I can't have colors compete. It doesn't jive with my style. So I took them out and put my white shutters in. These literally took me under 30 minutes to make. I didn't even measure really as I wanted a really imperfect, uneven look. I measured the length of the shutters and that was it.

How To Make Super Easy Farmhouse Shutters

Use scrap that you have laying around. Random 1 thick wood, pallet wood would even work. This project isn't supposed to cost much. For us it was free as we have a big scrap pile. You can often find pallets at Hardware stores, big box stores. Make sure to ask if you can take them as some businesses return them for money.

Grab paint of your choice. I painted them white, of course.

Either Black Paint or spray paint. I used spray paint for the bottom layer. I'll explain below

Piece of sand paper for distressing. I didn't sand the actual shutters at all as I wanted a really good surface to distress on.

If you're going to the store to get your wood cut, I find the perfect height for shutters is 34.. but again, this project is supposed to be cheap, so you can make them any height. You can find shorter pallets too.

That's it! Only two cuts, and they can totally be imperfect.

You want to screw the back horizontal pieces on first as you will be screwing straight down into the shutters. Once those are on, you can glue the top pieces on. No screw holes - unless you want screw holes. I'm not a fan.

So basically you're putting 4 screws into each horizontal piece, you want to screw each panel onto the boards.

Make Sense? The back should look like this

Next step is to paint your shutters. We have this easy, effortless way to get the farmhouse look. We use black or brown spray paint and spray the edges & between the boards. Let dry & then paint white, or your choice of color.

Once dry, distress. The dark color pop through and look like it's always been there. If wanting to see this tutorial more in depth, scroll down to the bottom of this tutorial .

See how easy this tutorial was? I didn't even have to do it for you.

See how one the top horizontal panels are uneven? That was done on purpose. haha - at least, that's what I'm going to tell you. I originally built them to go on either side of the TV. I didn't think they would be next to each other. You could easily measure 6 down and put them on even. But I didn't think I would of needed to.

You can also run a board across, from top to bottom.
