Liking Lichens

Walter Reeves
by Walter Reeves
Lichens are harmless to plants...they simply like to grow on the bark of a shrub or tree that has sparse leaf cover. Fertilize/water to make more leaves and lichens will go away.

I'm so glad this issue has been addressed! I have noticed a lot, really a lot of lichen as of late in RI, particularly in my own back yard. It's coating my aging stockade fence and has attached itself to my Mountain ash tree and my French Lilac. It makes the trunk of my trees look unhealthy. Will it ever go away?
