French Country Art Display From Old Frame

I love the look of shiplap, especially in weathered grey tones. Adding it to the back of a frame seemed like a great way to pull in a little shiplap look without all the construction.
This started with an old frame I spotted at my local thrift store. It had such amazing detail. I knew it could be something special with the right paint.
I used several layers of chalk paint on this one. I started with a few coats of white chalk paint, then added a layer of turquoise blue. Once the layers were on I used a wet rag to rub some of the chalk paint off, exposing the gold gilding underneath. Then I went back in with an ash white color and gave it a dry brush to add another layer of depth. I waxed it and the paint treatment was finished.
I knew I wanted something other than chalkboard for the backing so I decided to use some left over tongue and groove boards stained with plain old grey stain. I simply nailed them to the back of the frame once they were dry.
I bought some dollar clips from Wal Mart and painted them black with chalk paint. I'm sure you could find great black clips online but I wanted to finish the project so I just ran up to Wal Mart. I painted four in all but used only one for this display. I used a small brad nail to hang the clip on. The hole won't be noticeable so I can use more in the future.
I have big plans for this little display area. I'm already envisioning the cute vintage and French inspired art I will put up for the fall. You can see more projects on my blog, Slightly Coastal.
