DIY Farmhouse Tray and Display Box

I needed a tray to transport goodies out to our hot cocoa bar but wanted something that could also be a display piece so we decided to build one ourselves.
I really didn’t think we’d have to buy any new materials. I knew we had a bunch of 1″ MDF left over from the Mudroom project (I swear it will be done someday and I will share it) so that is what we used to make the box. I would have preferred to use 3/4 inch because the try is a bit heavy but this was free. He cut the pieces to the right length (12″ and 19″), glued them together and then also nailed them with the nail gun. Once the pieces were put together, and the box was formed, I spackled the joints.
I gave it a coat of primer and then a couple of coats of chalk paint.
So here’s where it gets fun. I decided that on one side I was going to paint a rectangle with chalk board paint. That way I can label it for different seasons or events that we may have like “Happy Birthday” or in this case, “Welcome Spring!”
I sanded it just a bit here and there it to make it look a little more rustic and added the Groceries to the other side.
Then I added cute little knobs on the bottom for feet.

Such a great idea for housing condiments such as sugar, salt/pepper shakers or cheese boards, etc. I like the idea of using chalk board paint on the tray to create your cheery messages, happy spring, happy fall, etc. This is a great way of keeping counter tops clean and can be used as a serving tray when needed. This is absolutely a fabulous project.
