I was really in love with the idea of using mason jars for an indoor herb garden. I have seen several versions of how clever people made them up. I was just waiting for the right idea to hit me.
I found this cabinet door frame for $1 at the Re-Store. It was bare wood that someone had written on but I used a fine sanding block and was able to remove that.
I lucked out that we had a nice day so that I could spray paint the piece white, outside instead of in the garage!
I used a little left over stain to wipe on some age and then let the whole thing dry.
I debated what to do with the opening. At first I though chicken wire but didn't have any so my husband suggested maybe a chalkboard. I had some leftover chalkboard foam core from another project and stapled it in place (on the back) so that the chalkboard would show through the front. I can always change that out in the future if I decide.
I purchased 3" plumbing clamps to use as brackets to hold my mason jars. My husband pre-drilled the holes for screws to make it easier to attach to the wood frame.
I had measured and marked where I wanted the brackets (and jars) to be placed and we screwed the clamps into place.
Added my clearance mason jars (purchased for a miraculous $.35 each). I added the string in case I decide to hang seed packets in the future with tiny clothes pins.
I used some of the kids' sidewalk chalk and wrote on the blackboard. Now I just have to wait until my herbs grow big enough to plant. I have started the seeds in small pots and they are not large enough to transplant yet but I hope they make it. I intend to put a small layer of gravel and then charcoal in the jars, then add soil and the herbs. It will hang in the dining/kitchen area where I get great sun and natural light.
Enjoyed the project?

I just moved the tiny plants from their starter containers to the Mason Jars. Waiting to make sure they take before hanging on the wall.
