Today I am going to share with you how to recycle, spring clean and DIY all at once! For mother's day, my hubby and I spent the day making some hanging basket planters. Since we do not have a porch, I've never had the luxury of purchasing those beautiful hanging baskets. When I came across an ad on Facebook marketplace, I knew we could build the perfect hanging basket planters for our deck. I also knew that we had old studs (from the 1880's) laying behind our home that were on the spring cleaning to do list. They've been laying there since last February from our nursery remodel and I was finally ready to get the clutter cleaned up and gone. But then I had the idea..what if we could recycle them and use them for this project?!
This is what we started with..plain, old studs that were perfectly weathered. They were from the 1880's and had the weathered, rustic look we were going for.
We simply cut the studs to size, screwed them together, stained the base, and added a ceiling hook for our hanging baskets. The full tutorial is on my blog at http://haydenscharrer.com/reclaimed-wood-hanging-planter/
We ended up making three of these since we accidentally purchased three hanging baskets at the store. They were pushed so tightly together that we didn't even notice there were three! Two were placed in front of our front door shown here and the other one was place in front of our side door.
This particular stud still had an old door flange on it so we kept it for the added character. They add the perfect touch of rustic charm to our front deck and now I can display hanging baskets year after year! We were left with one stud which I'm sure we'll find another project for, so our spring cleaning was finished with one simple DIY project, how cool is that?

If you can recycle some wood you have laying around, this project will only cost you the price of the hanging basket, a ceiling hook and some screws. You also do not have to use the pocket hole tool but I like my screws to be hidden.
