The beach is one of my favorite places to go. I just love the sand, the waves, the breeze...and the shells! I don't make a trip without collecting a handful or two, but I've never found a good way to display the prettiest ones - until now. No more bags and boxes for these beauties!
We're blessed to live within a couple of hours of some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere! The sands are sugar-white and the water is clear and sparkly.
And there's always pretty shells at the water's edge, just waiting to be scooped up.
Often I find a good shell or two, but rarely do I find so many beautiful and perfect shells at once. These were some a friend found on one of her recent trips - and shared with me. Her trip was unique, and if you'd like to read the story, head over to the blog.
Many of them were still perfect and the smoother ones even looked like they had been polished! It was a beautiful collection, and I knew I needed to find a great way to display and enjoy some of them.
Of course - paint! I love paint and a coastal project begged for some sandy-colored ones. I chose a couple of nice colors (Desert Sand and Vanilla Shake - both by Deco Art Americana) and blended them with an equal part of play sand to create the perfect beach texture.
To display the shells, I used a 12 x 12 streched canvas and 9 - 3 x 3 flat canvases.
Here's how to make your own beach shells canvas:
Start by painting the small canvases. I used a chip brush because it made it easy to swirl the paint/sand mixture and play with it until I liked the textured look on each canvas.
After they dried, I chose 9 of my favorite shells and arranged them, one on each canvas, until I found what I liked. Using tacky craft glue, I glued each of them in place and let them dry.
For the large canvas, I only used Vanilla Shake paint, again mixed with play sand.
Once everything was dry, I just arranged the smaller canvases onto the large one and glued them down.
I love how it turned out and that I can now enjoy those gorgeous shells every day at my table. Even if I can't go to the beach every day, I can still enjoy it's presence!
By the way: if you don't live near the beach or have easy access to shells, they're available online from Amazon. Visit the blog for a link to a nice collection.

Hi Jo,
No, I actually live near the gulf coast. 😊 Yes, the glue worked beautifully. That canvas is still hanging with no slips at all.
