If you read my blog or watch my youtube channel, then you would know that my boyfriend moved in with me this year! As Monica said it in F.R.I.E.N.D.S “Now, I have to live with a BOY!!!” and then starts crying. When I first told my friends and family that Nick was moving in, their immediate reaction was “are you going to change the decor in the bedroom?” My decor before Nick moved in was very girly. I had sparkly gold curtains but it was one of those things that you were so use to the look of it, that you didn’t think twice about it, until it was brought to your attention. Well after taking in recommendations from my friends and family, I decided to change the bedroom and have it become a balance of masculine and feminine. Also, I wanted to share my tips on how to fuse the styles together.
1. Go with a masculine color palette.I decided my colors would gray, white, black, and blue. My opinion is that you can make any color scheme look girly but you can’t make the color pink masculine. If you can make pink masculine go for it. I would just find it harder. My compromise was dark grey curtains but they have small specks of silver glitter in them. That way you don’t give up your style.
2. Make sure you both have your areas. My biggest issue with my room was storage. I was living in my apartment alone previously before Nick moved in, which ment I already had all the storage filled with all of my stuff. My biggest concern was to have space for Nick’s stuff. I want him to feel like this was his apartment right away, instead of feeling like it was my apartment that he was moving into. In order to have a place for his things I decided to purge my items and also bring in a new piece of furniture. I got a chest of draws from my grandmother because she was getting rid of it and painted it white to go with the color scheme and to go with the rest of the furniture. Also having your separate areas, will avoid aggravation. If you live together, you are already sharing so much already. It’s better to have separate areas for your stuff.
3. Try green plants instead of flowers.I am always drawn to plants. Flower in particularly but instead of flowers try green plants. They give brightness and a different color to the room, without throwing off your color palette. Also, everyone know plants are gender neutral, don’t they?
4. Get Sentimental.A well-designed room reflects the lives and style of the people who live there. Try decorating with a abstract painting that both of you painted one rainy night. Decorating with pictures of adventures that you have experience together. I decided to showcase pictures of travel in black and white to make it look cool and artsy. I got the prints from staples and the frames from AC Moore. Three pictures cost me $30, you just have to be creative.
5. You both live there, so no matter what, it’s going to feminine or masculineDon’t feel like you have to choose between masculine and feminine styles because no matter what your styles will blend.
Also this isn’t a tip of style but for the setup of a room. If you read above then you know I had to bring in an extra piece of furniture. Since I need another piece, I needed more room. I moved around my bed and originally had it pushed right up to the wall, which was difficult for me to get up in the morning because i had to literally climb out of bed. I tried to caddy corner the bed. I got rid of the side tables and bought a corner desk from amazon, which was about the same height of the bed. The desk acted as our end tables, we purchased two lamps for symmetry. I didn’t have a head board, so I need to drawn the eye up but what can you do in a corner? I got two long floating shelves from Home Depot, placed them close together at the same height. I love the setup of my room. It looks unique and there is so much room for activities. (name that movie)
