You have heard of "Build your own Doll" or "Build your own Bear." Now a child can "Build your own Chair." This rocker for toddler and preschool-age play is more than it seems. It is also a puzzle that comes apart and goes back together. Children love activities and challenges. They may sit in a rocker for a few minutes, but they want more than that to do in their busy world of short attention spans and love of learning. Here is a child-sized rocking chair that comes in 8 pieces that can be taken apart and put back together again over and over.
My husband and I have the pattern for the chair. He cuts them out and paints them either brown or red, depending on a small one's preference.
Projects are always more fun with a little help. He uses 1/4 inch plywood. One 8 foot sheet will make two rockers. For this you need 1/2 sheet of 1/4 inch plywood, pencil, and a saw that cuts around corners like a coping saw or scroll saw, sand paper, and paint.
Everyone wants in on the fun. After he traces each of the eight pieces, he cuts them out and sands them for painting. He had the paint and sander. Apply two coats of paint.
After they are dry, they can be fit together like a simple 8 piece puzzle. They look a little complicated, but after taking one apart, it is not hard to put them back again. Most children conquer the puzzle in a short time. It gives them something constructive to do. Older grandchildren also love to help Grandpa when they happen to be visiting during his wood working project days.
Here is someone the little tyke can rock and sing to before they go down for a nap. The rockers can also be personalized with a name, theme, or holiday decorations painted on the front, back, and sides.
