DIY Basement Mudroom Area
As part of a complete basement remodel, we turned a dark hallway/bathroom area into a bright and functional mudroom space. We saved money by using scrap wood to build a bench and molding to make a coat rack.
This is how the space started 2 years ago at the beginning of the renovation. the non-tiled area was a tiny bathroom which made the hallway dark and closed off from the rest of the basement. It was in this state for quite a while, since it was the last area we tackled.
We replaced the window with a larger one and the door with a full lite (we found these at our local ReStore). We also replaced a few rotten studs, insulated the walls, and hung new drywall.
We ripped up the tile, leveled the floor with concrete leveler, and laid luxury vinyl plank flooring. We painted the walls a light grey to match the rest of the basement area. This is what it looked like when we began building the mudroom.
We used scrap wood we had on hand from shelving we tore out of the garage area to build this easy bench with cubbies underneath. We painted it a darker contrasting gray.
We built a large closet on the side of the bench using studs and plywood for the door. We hung drywall on the side that faces the bench, so it appears to be built in and painted it the same color as the walls.
I used a piece of base molding we had left over and attached coat hooks to it to make the rack above the bench. My hubby DIY'ed the cushion from foam wrapped in leather.
We installed base molding around the room and trimmed out around the door and windows. The door was painted a pretty sea glass color. We DIY'ed the boot drying tray from scrap wood as well and inserted a plastic tray we purchased from Amazon. This space went from dark and cramped to bright and airy and serves as a space to drop all of our dirty boots and jackets.
