I found a Smith-Corona portable typewriter for free on Freecycle. I picked it up this morning and a hour or so later it is now a decorative succulent planter in my garden.
This model had a lid, so that is being saved for another project. I took the cover off and flipped it over and drilled three drainage holes in the bottom of the casing. Then I removed the ribbon.
I added some succulent mix to the inside of the typewriter. I could not get the mechanism out but succulents only need shallow soil, so I left that in. Then I added some succulents cuttings from my existing plants. Topped it off with some pink decorative stones I had from another project.
I thought it needed a little something else so I bought an iron lizard or gecko from a plant nursery. It has enough weight it not to blow away in windy weather. Sat that atop the stones and plants and voila.
