All you need to create an ever-changeable set of yard art is some scrap wood and paint.
Reclaimed fence boards are the base for this project but you could use any scrap wood you may have on hand. Old garden stakes create the base for these. I used a jigsaw to cut the heart shapes but you can certainly purchased unfinished shapes as well.
Start by giving the boards a wash of white paint. Sand and distress lightly - no need to completely cover these unless that's the look you're going for. I wanted a weathered look so wasn't concerned about complete coverage of the wood.
To get different shades of the same color, just add a little bit of white paint each time you begin a new piece.
I started with solid red then added a little bit of white for a deep pink and finally a lot of white for a pale pink.
You could stop there but since I was going for that 'weathered' look, I sanded the hearts and applied a bit of dark wax (you could also use stain) to give them a more aged appearance.
To make attaching the stakes to the boards easier, I drilled a hole all the way through the stakes.
Using an awl (one of my FAVORITE tools), I placed the stake on the back of the board where I wanted it to be attached. The awl pierced a nice, deep hole in the back of the board where the screw would continue through and attach the stake.
Wood screws were then used to attach the stakes. (Note: My signs are each different heights so I made sure that the BOTTOMS were lined up before deciding were to put the stakes.)
What makes these 'multi-seasonal' is the fact that you can leave the boards in the ground (or in my case, the buckets) and just swap out the wood shape. I decided to just pound a long nail in for the hearts to hang on. I drilled a hole in each heart large enough for them to slip onto the nail. You could also use the type of hooks that screw in. I think that I may swap these out to hooks at some point but for now, this is what I used. I also gave everything a coat of clear acrylic since these will be exposed to the elements year round.
These bucket house numbers are in front of my house and that's where I used these decorations. It's a great option for me since this is under a very large tree. This area gets very little sunlight making it hard to grow anything in these pots even in the summer.
You could put these signs directly into the ground of course and they'd be just as cute.
So easy now to celebrate any holiday. Shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day, Flowers or Eggs for Spring/Easter, Flags for 4th of July, Sunflowers for Mid-summer, Pumpkins for fall, ornaments for Christmas . . . lots of possibilities! Multi-Season is THE way to go!
