Valentines. I am all onboard for giving out boxes brimming with chocolate to my loved ones. But, how about something extra? How about something handmade with care, that gives your loved ones sort of a "hug" when they use it?
So, how about...an aromatherapy pillow!
Now in case you have never tried an aromatherapy rice pillow, they are WONDERFUL. They are small pillows filled loosely with rice and most often scented with essential oils. You can heat them in the microwave for 1-2 minutes and then use them for heat therapy on sore muscles or for pms cramping. Once heated, they deliver comforting warmth and the oils release the most relaxing scent. You can also put them in the freezer like an ice pack.

Here is a tutorial for a snuggly heart shaped aromatherapy pillow...
This is what you will make. A soft, scented and cozy aromatherapy pillow.
Gather your supplies: 1/2 yard of fabric; 7 cups uncooked rice, aromatherapy oil you like; scissors; needle and thread; sewing machine if you have (can be sewn by hand - but easier with machine)
Add 7 drops essential oil to rice, stir and let absorb for a couple hours.
Print two copies of half heart template found on my blog.
Cut out two half hearts.
Fold fabric in half and lay two heart shapes together. I added 1 inch around template and traced that. I wanted the pillow to be a bit larger than what was possible to print on standard pillow. Adding 1 inch makes the perfect size.
Cut along lines.
Pint your two halves of heart together.
Sew by machine or hand along outside but leave a two inch opening so you can fill pillow.
You can make a funnel with half of the heart template and then fill the pillow. Do not overstuff. You want the rice to be able to move around.
Sew with needle and thread along the opening to seal.
Warm it up and snuggle!
(warm in 30 second intervals, moving around each time until warm to touch. Two minutes top)
