Hi Mark, I've found that a few drops of peppermint essential oils really helps keep most bugs away
Hi. My dad taught me this one. You can make this homemade bait to get rid of those jerk ants! ;)
Mix one part Borax with 3 parts powered sugar. I put this in soda bottle caps and place several where they seem to be coming in (or, at the very least, along their hiking paths!). They'll take some of this back to their 'homes' and it'll kill 'em there!
Aside from calling a bug expert, here are some diy ways you can try out:

We placed Terro ant baits on floor, stacks of bay leaves on countertop. Ants were gone immediately and have not returned.
Well they are not coming in on the counter top, so you have to find where they are getting in. We use home defense (at the local hardware or lowes, menards etc) and spray all around the outside of the house. I've only had ants one time, I found where they were getting in and sprayed home defense around the area (it was on the floor under a cabinet) and they have not been back since.
Add powder to the ants that should do the trick
1cup warm water 1/2 cup sugar 2 Tablespoons Borax
Mix to dissolve ( I put this in the microwave for a few minutes)
Soak a cotton ball in this mixture place cotton on a small piece of foil. Don't disturb ants will be gone the next day
