Fixing A Split Table Top

When the boards on your table separate and become unlevel, it becomes an eyesore. Here's how to fix it.
First you need to figure out why your top split. This table top split due to the way it was screwed into the base. To watch a short video why, click here.
Remove the top from the base. Separate all the boards by either removing screws or cutting them apart . If the edges need cleaned up, run them through a jointer. If they don't, use a piece of 12 grit sandpaper to remove any dirt.
Refasten all the boards back together. You can use a kreg jig or a biscuit joiner. I personally prefer a biscuit joiner because it keeps the board level (and it's cheaper).
Drill through a 1x1 or 1x2 with a forstener bit. Then use a drill bit the same size as your screw to drill through each center.
All except the center hole, reinsert the drill bit and rock it back and forth to widen the drilled hole.
Predrill and fasten the 1x1 to the top of your table base. Center your table top onto the base and screw through the 1x1 into your top.
Sand, stain, and finish the top! Enjoy!
