One of my best friends gave me a lovely small trunk and silk greenery. She and her husband moved hundreds of miles away, and they travel as much as 8-9 months a year. She went for hikes in the Alps, strolls through Scotland farmland, and walks around the Roman Colloseum and much more this summer. I miss her so much. I retrieved the trunk from a corner in the living room and thought about some of the projects I want to do, and knew she would approve. We both love our families.
I needed storage for our grandchildren’s costumes and dress up accessories. This trunk, the larger of two, was the perfect size!

A hand is growing there!
This chest and silk plant Is attractive, but I believe while the youngest grands are still playing dress up, we will enjoy the trunk better as a theater trunk, full of costumes. The first step was to remove the plant, tons of florists’ moss, and a big block of styrofoam. The material was really packed in there! I’m saving it all for another time, packed in Walmart bags.
It’s dirty in there!
After removing all the moss, I realized the trunk needed cleaning. Since the trunk is made of wood with plastic decorations on the outside. I used hydrogen peroxide on paper towels to wipe all the surfaces clean.
It’s trimmed in gold.
After cleaning the trunk inside and out, I decided the granddaughters would like a little enhancement. I didn’t want to glue things on or add glitter because I want the trunk easy to convert back to a planter or another piece of decor. So I used Metal Gold from LAColors to add the look of old gold leaf to some of the raised deatails.
In they go!
The girls started pulling costumes and accessories from the toy box, from under my bed and off the chair. In Claire’s hand is a “microphone” made of a foam and covered in aluminum foil. A mermaid bottom, a couple of ballet costumes, a Santa hat, a white furry cape, a Marti Gras crown—and even some secrets—half filled the trunk.
Two happy girls!
The trunk was a great success. About an hour’s work (I work slowly) was time well spent to have a theater trunk at my house for my granddaughters.

Thank you, William. School starts in a week, so I’m cramming all the playtime and craft time with them that I can. ☺️
