I have made quite a few dessert / cake stands over the past months and even years.. many for my daughters wedding reception. I wanted to create something for my grandkids along the same line. Here is a recent upcycle of some glasses and plates for young and old. The cost ranged from $2 for plastic version to approximately $7 for most expensive glass version. These make great gifts too - just make sure that you specify not dishwasher safe :)
My grandkids love playing in their little kitchen sooooo I thought maybe my granddaughter would like one for her food/parties. So off I head to a thrift shop to see what kind of neat plastic plates and glasses they have..
The project is super simple. You will need E6000, a glass with flat edges, a plate with smooth surface on bottom and a weight (book or gallon of oil) to help the glue bond well.
Grown-up version - using a glass platter and a margarita glass.
You will turn the plate over with top facing down, I like to turn my glass over (upside down) and glue the glass bottom to bottom of plate after centering up. Add the E6000 to the rim of the glass bottom and then place on bottom of plate. I do this so that the drinking bowl (which is larger) serves as the bottom of cake stand that will rest on the table. This provides a greater surface area adding stability when the stand is actually in use.
After it has set up somewhat, I carefully turn it over and add a weight (this cheap vegetable oil was purchased for some other projects) and let it set for 24 hours with the weight on.
Finished product will look like this and your cookies, cupcakes and cakes will look awesome on it. You can use so many items for the stands... I have used candlesticks, vases and more. Just put them together when you are out shopping and then bring it home and glue it!
Books are a good weight also!
Here is a large variety that I made for my daughter's wedding reception :)
I really found some neat platters to use!
Second, kid option - this one is not as stable as the margarita glass, wished I could have found a plastic sherbet dish. I like doing different heights to give variety and especially if in a setting
Sillier the better!

I've done a number of similar pieces combining candle sticks and various bowls, plates, etc. Unfortunately, I've run into problems with pieces being top heavy. Have you run into this problem? If so, how did you correct it?

Really cute. I would love to make some of these for the holidays. Could you do this with the heavier flower vases?

This is really cool! What could be used to cover a cake once placed on the stand?

I have a thrift store nearby and I am buying up clear glass bowls for displaying fruit on the counter. I love your idea. It will make more pieces displayable in my kitchen.

I would love to but there is something wrong with my ability to upload on my computers. I am using a cake plate with dome for bananas. This keeps the fruit flies away. I also cut the bananas apart so that it is easier to stack them and grab one at a time quickly.
