I wanted to make a special desk paper weight for a relative that loves to fish all over our nation. He has fished in many states for many kinds of fish and is almost always successful at what he does. He introduced our son to fishing when he personally made and gave him about 100 lures to fish for trout.
Using materials on hand, I wanted to make a "shock and awe" type paper weight. I wanted it to be extra special. I looked all over for miniature men that resembled hillbillies or mountain men. All I found were aliens or super heroes. Then I saw the perfect fishing buddies!
I bought the bunnies off the "dollar wall" at Walmart where they put special items on sale in the back behind the hardware section. I had the beads, epoxy resin, glass mini-fish bowl, and skewer rod to use for a pole. I also had some special lures to put in the epoxy for fish and a beaded line to represent a wet fishing line. I cut the skewer down to about 1/3 its size. I think we bought the small glass at Walmart a few years ago for less than one dollar. They still sell them for 88 cents.
I put the glass beads in the "pond." Since I would be keeping the "fish bowl" for the pond, the epoxy resin or even glue can be used for the "water." Using a hair dryer, I worked out all the bubbles.
Here is a close up of one of the trout in the bowl. They show up much better than the photos allow.
I added the pole under one bunny's arm and secured it with a matching colored wire. It does not show at all. The flat rocks are from a near by river bed. I used a little glue under the bunny feet.
I love the way it turned out and can't wait to give it to my relative to put on his office desk as a reminder of his days away from the work place and as a thank you for all he has done for our family. The waiting for the Epoxy and glue to set up took most of the time. Allow several days for it to harden. The biggest cost was the Epoxy, if glue were used the cost would have been minimal, less than $3.
Suggested materials:
