3 Creative Ways to Decorate a Simple Planter

When a blogging friend sent me one of her wood project kits, I decided to put my own stamp of personality on it and dress it up with three of my favorite crafty methods: paint, stencils, and decoupage!

Here's what I got (along with instruction on how to put it together).

Working with wood and (especially) power tools isn't my strong suit, but I love, love, love wood projects, so I was super excited to get this kit in the mail.

All the pieces were already measured and cut...all I had to do was dress them up and assemble!

I started with a soft pink chalk paint finish. I painted all three of the long sections, but left the end pieces bare.

Because THIS is what they got!

I love buffalo check, and found this pretty pink version on Amazon. The truth is...these are actually zippered pillow covers. I know - it seems almost sad to chop up a pillow cover for a project, but they actually ended up costing less than what I could purchase a length of fabric for.

So I ordered them, snipped off the zippers, and decoupaged them onto the side pieces.

For the front, I used a stencil I designed especially for this project, and transferred it using silver metallic paint.

And to dress it up a little more along the front and across the back, I added another stencil I designed - this pretty vining leaf pattern. A splash of chalk white was perfect for pulling the colors together.

After the paint and decoupage was dry, it was time to assemble!

You could totally use this for fresh plants, but I decided to keep mine indoors, so I hot-glued these floral cubes into the bottom of the box.

Finally, I added some faux flowers, greenery, and moss.

I love how it turned out!

It sits in front of my desk now and I love seeing it every day. It reminds me how blessed I am and of my special friend who shared her talents for wood design with me.
