You need to make an L shaped with your wood and add wood to the 2sides. That shape will just slip on to the mantel. You can sure it with silicone to hold it in place.
I would anchor a wooden one on top with a construction glue and attach a wooden plank to the front also and refinish them both. You might want the top one to be wider than the cement so the front one fits under the top. I think it would look awesome.
