How do I cover brick corbels on fireplace with wood?
Hi, I have a 1921 brick FP in my Arts and Crafts bungalow. I am stripping the white paint and removing 90s white tile from the 4” wood mantel shelf. I’d like to cover the brick corbels with wood to match the mantel shelf, which looks to be fir. I plan to add a few 6” tile motifs to the bare brick. This is my ‘affordable’ option after sticker shock for a planned A&C tile and new mantle. I don’t know how to cover the brick corbels and with what? AM I gluing wood veneer over each brick surfacee or is that tacky? How might I build 2 wood corbels? I don’t want to cut them off. I’m old and sore as it is! Thanks for any help.

If you want to cover them with wood, an adhesive like Liquid Nails should work.
Have you thought about how you will match the antique finish of the mantle to the new wood? I think that’s going to be quite tricky and will take a lot of samples and trial and error. And it still may not match well. Do you really dislike the corbels that much?
Hello. For a temporary feature I would consider use a very thin wood veneer and some stick on Velcro or double-sided tape. Just in case you get tired of the lock it could be removable.
I would make a box and attach to the underside of the mantel. You can use "L" brackets to attach.
You can glue thin plywood to the brick. Wood underlayment would work. Use construction adhesive in a caulk tube. You can build a wood box corbel to slip over the bricks tightly and glue it on. If you do want to build a box corbel use cardboard and tape to make a template and to see how it would look. Then use the template for building the corbels.
Sad to see you cover them. Measure the depth at the top and the distance to the bottom brick from the top of the first brick straight down the mantel to the bottom of the last brick you want to cover. Make a 3 sided box that side in wood. Attach the edges with Loctite adhesive. It is strong, holds immediately but gives you plenty of time to adjust it.
Bye bye corbels.
If it was me I would attempt to paint out the corbels with a paint or stain that goes with the mantle. It doesn't look like there's much room to build something wooden over the brick corbels that won't stick out too far.
You could build a "L" shaped box (like a top and sides of a box), easily removed or decorated. and just slip it over the top of the mantle and hold it in place with decoration on the flat top part.
I would either build a box to cover the corbel or get some Luan wood and stain to match your mantle. Loctite makes a very strong adhesive. You can glue the Luan to the corbel with that or construction glue.
Yes use Brick size wood and stick it to the existing tile.
Laura, check out your post from March. When you tagged me/ replied to my answer on that post , I answered the question there. Hope that it helps.
Yes make a box and adhere the wood pieces to the box and your mantel could span the distance between the two boxes.
Cant you keep them there and work around them
I wonder if just painting the corbels to look like wood would be the easiest fix for you?
Here's a link that might help

Hi Laura, the easiest way wood be to paint the brick corbels in a color that matches your wood mantle shelf. Up close it won't look like wood but it will tone in.
Do you want the wood you put on the fireplace to match the wooden mantel or paint the wood out to match the fireplace? Getting those two to line up or match perfectly is going to be very very difficult. Or do you have other plans on how to handle that?
Try paint first. If you don't like it you aren't out much
You could eather build them up with plaster or build a thin box over them
Here is how you could cover them with paint, if you decide to go that route: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSHUDc3YDX0

I'd build a form or shape that fits over it with wood and attach it to the mantel from the underside.
In case you would want to cover them with wood, then you can make use of adhesives such as liquid nails. Or I also suggest to create a box then attach it to the mantel at its underside.
