I found a couple vintage school desks at a local Habitat for Humanity and thought they would make perfect play desk for my girls- after a little love. To make things fun, I let my girls choose the colors and design.
The desks didn't start with much personality, but they were both in solid condition. I had to do some basic cleaning and sanding in preparation for painting.
The only disassembling I did was removing the top writing area. This made it easier to paint the seat and the writing area.
I used spray paint to paint the desks. The first desk was painted in 4 different colors - Purple, Pink, Blue, & White. All of the areas had 3-4 thin coats to ensure good, even coverage. The full painting process took 3 days to ensure proper drying in between coats.
I painted the back support bars first since it was the smallest area. They were painted a brilliant purple.
Next, I taped off the back bars and painted the seat pink. After the seat had fully dried, I taped it off and painted the inside storage area white. This made the desk feel a little brighter.
Finally, I covered the interior compartment and painted the rest of the desk blue. This color scheme came from my 5 year old and mimicked her Barbie Jeep!
My 2 year old chose a clean pink and white color scheme. I was happy to oblige with the simple design!
The finished desks turned out perfectly and are now the favorite spot for coloring, drawing, and school work!
