Ginette...You will need to sand the legs and areas you will paint, prime then paint. The sanding will help the paint to adhere to the surface. I like Citristrip Gel but you can find several good products at Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace, etc. They will help you with items you need for your project. You can do this, amateur or pro...just enjoy and have fun! After this you will be looking for other pieces to do!
A stripper is the best way to go. Be careful not to let it sit long enough to dry or you will have a horrible mess. Citristrip is one of the least caustic materials. I use a cheap paint brush to apply. If you have turns and crevices, those are the most difficult.
Once you have the existing finish removed, lightly sand with sandpaper (probably 220 grit), then clean with either TSP or denatured alcohol. Now you are ready for the new finish.
You can stain & seal, prime & paint, or just seal if the wood is a pretty color.
Citristrip from Lowes or Home depot will do the job.
