My husband and I recently fixed up a house. We wanted to added something fun to the living room to make it more attractive. So, we decided to shiplap the fireplace and add a wood mantel. I am so glad we did it. I think it helped resell the house, that’s what we got the most compliments on after we finished everything. The shiplap was from Lowe’s and the wood mantel was from amazon. I picked an unfinished mantel so I could choose the stain in person. I began by staining the bottom of the mantel just in case I wasn't crazy about the stain I chose. Thankfully, the first stain I used I loved and it was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something a tad darker than the wood floor, but not too dark. We also had to paint the gold on the fireplace, which we choose to do black. It made it look a lot more sleek and clean. We painted the shiplap and the trim all the same color. Then I bought this magnolia wreath at Hobby Lobby and these black lanterns at Wal-Mart. This was a fun project, and I'm very happy with how it turned out!

This was before paint and before stain.

This is how it looks when the shiplap is being installed.

After he finished installing it.

I stained underneath the mantel to make sure I liked it first.

After stain and paint but before decor.

Beautiful ! I am planning to build one like this. Can you share the dimensions of your gas insert? Is it 29, 32, or 36

With any gas fireplace that produces radiant heat off of the front, there is a minimum requirement to combustible materials like the shiplap shown here. This does not show the proper spacing here for any gas fireplace. An electric fireplace is the alternative to a gas in this situation. Even though electric fireplaces produce a lot less heat thana gas, it makes it possible to lessen the space requirement of the fireplace to combustible materials. With that being said, this design is absolutely beautiful :)
