You need to dig and pull out.
Round-Up.......cut if off, wearing mask & gloves and long sleeved pants shirts remove tops put in garbage bags( thoroughly wash clothing shoes tools anything that you have used to remove the tops;get 2 gallon pump sprayer(not a back pack don't risk leaking solution on your back) buy concentrate Round-Up add food coloring to it(so you can see where you are spraying it) mix it 1/2 concentrate and 1/2 water as soon as you see new leaves growing on stems spray them heavily, soaking them with the Round-Up. It is absorbed into leaves then stems then kills root systems. Round-Up works best when plant is in vigorous growth after being cut off & new leaves are emerging.Keep checking for new growth and spray thru out growing season.Depending how big the area is it may take a few weeks to following year to get it all. Put spray nozzle down onto leaves when spraying & do not spray in wind or breezy conditions;use gloves;do not walk or get in wet solution. Follow the safety instructions on container they are & have always been on the container for a reason,it's a hazardous chemical. If they are growing up onto your trees, you cut the base of the poison ivy trunks with chain saw spray ASAP as you cut it( trunk) with the concentrate(the trunk will self heal within seconds sap forms so it needs sprayed quick or it will not get absorbed the sap will just push it out, have someone spray while another cuts); the tops will die on their own after cutting them off. Use pry bar/crowbars to remove top parts after it has been cut & dies it will be easier to remove since it's dead the attaching discs/aerial roots will release from your trees. They will takes weeks/months to completely die and let go of your trees maybe even into following year. then follow above instructions to be rid of the rest of it.Keep constant watch for new growth everywhere around the area it spreads underground sending up new growth. Only other way is try to find the massive underground root balls and remove them with backhoe.I did landscaping/Perennial garden care over 20 yrs. poison ivy, english ivy, poison oak, poison sumac nightmares in the garden
Cut at the base so that it will wither. Apply herbicide at the cut. Once it withers, you can remove the ivy. For permanent removal, you have to remove from the ground.
Pull it out by the roots
You have options. Trim to ground level and drown in vinegar repeatedly if you are not comfortable using toxic chemicals. Or start to work in sections and just dig it out. Not easy, but certainly doable.
This is just the thing! I find this works wonderfully. You have to cut down the ivy and then brush this on the top of where you cut it. Bonide
