Carnivorous Chenille and Walnut Shell Plant
In a nutshell, this DIY project involves crafting a fuzzy carnivorous plant. For this DIY project, you’ll be using chenille wire, a glue gun, acrylic paint, brushes, paper, a flowerpot plus walnut shells. A fun autumn DIY project to do with boys or tough girls. Collect the shells from walnuts and create a home-made birthday gift, trendy nursery decoration or a surprise for Christmas.
Take 4-5 walnut shells (from 2-3 walnuts). The insides should be as clean and smooth as possible.
Use two of the shells to make the trap. Paint the insides and the edges pink. The outsides can be painted in a different colour, such as green or red.
To make the leaves, paint the remaining shells green on the inside and outside. Once dry, paint on veins using a thin brush.
Paint the ends of a couple of toothpicks white.
Take the two pieces of chenille wire and intertwine them to create the stem. Depending on how long they are, you can then fold them in half and intertwine them again.
Bend the ends of the chenille stem outwards and use the glue gun to stick the walnut shells for the trap onto the wires.
Cut up pieces of toothpick and use Tacky Glue to stick them to the edge of the walnut shell. These represent the plant’s teeth.
Take a few more pieces of chenille wire in various shades of green. Curl over one end of each wire and wind the other end around the plant stem.
Cut a circle measuring 6.8cm in diameter out of brown paper and make a hole in the middle measuring approximately 5mm. Insert the stem through the hole and place the plant in the pot. Press down so that the stem is secure and the brown paper fits nicely into the flowerpot.
Glue the painted walnut shell leaves onto the plant, just above the rim of the pot. Add more chenille wires and decorations if desired.
