How do I update a bathroom floor on a budget?
How can we update our very dated tile in our bathroom without tearing out the existing tile? We do not have the money to do much, but really need a change. Note that the exact same tile is on the shower floor.

Tile paint. Paint all one color. Paint and dab another color on top. Paint with a stencil. It will blur the lines and patter of the tiles. Lowes, Sherwin Williams, Home Depot all carry the paint. Use a few coats of brush on poly when you are done. Add a new throw rug and you have a new bathroom!
You can paint your bathroom floor tile Amy. I don't think the paint for the floor would work in the shower however.

I painted our floors and absolutely love it!
If you don't want to paint the tile, you could consider changing the grout to a color that pops.
If you also want to paint the tile in the shower also you would need to use epoxy based paint. Any other paint will not hold up with direct contact with water. Rustoleum or Homax tub and tile paint kit. Home Depot, Lowe's, or Menard's carry it. Proper prep is the key.
Thanks!
Hii Amy, here's a video for you. I have seen this done on concrete and it truly is Rock Solid and is easy to maintain, stays beautiful and impervious to anything. In your small bathroom and shower it wouldn't be terribly expensive. The color choice is not large but I can't say enough good things about how easy it is to take care of.

Whether you decide to paint your tiles or not, I would suggest that you switch out your lightbulbs from the older incandescent (yellowy light) or fluorescent (greeny light) with new bright and clear LED bulbs, - daylight or cool light. Doing so would be a fast and inexpensive way to freshen up the whole room for only a few dollars spent.
Re: Kathy's comment above:
Before grouting can be replaced with new, the old must first be thoroughly taken out. Trying to remove the grouting from all those little lines would be a painstaking frustrating process ; IMO not a good use of time or labour.
