Linda: ...pick a neutral color ...clean the cabinet surfaces. ....take off all hardware (hinges, handles). ....prime. ...then two coats of a good latex. ...treat the cabinets gently for a month ore so --- to help the paint cure.
Hi Linda! I've used Used Annie Sloan Chalk paint on many kitchen cabinets. It works great! Here is a tutorial on how to chalk paint your kitchen cabinets.

More tips to go with Nan's. Make sure you label doors and drawers using painter's tape and corresponding number inside the cabinet. Put all hardware in a sealed container. Use TSP to clean. Use a paint that is formulated for heavy duty use, perhaps even just for cabinets. I would check with Sherwin Williams.
Most important: Research and watch a ton of youtube and other tutorials. Pick up as many pointers as you can.
Here's a start in your research:

Yes for what Kathy said! Make sure you label those doors and drawers, as silly as it sounds, they have to be back in the precise place! And I used chalk paint on my cabinets and sealed with polycrylic and they are holding up very nicely.
Linda....Clean really well, remove doors and hardware (number each door to replace to correct cabinet). sand if needed, if not prime and paint. Good luck
