Side Yard Water Problem Solution, and After Pictures Edited at the End
i built a French drain last year hoping to solve a pooling of water after a heavy rain but it didn’t solve the problem entirely.
So where it pools, I am now building a walkway slanting downward and a trench around the patio.
It’s in the beginning stages of development and I’m posting it because I’d like to hear from others with suggestions.
A Landscaper told me to sweep play sand in the cracks not mortar or cement. Here’s what I’ve got so far, looking forward to your creative suggestions from Hometalk tutors and members.
Thank you,
Grace
There is the French drain I put in last year. It works but the area in the middle floods, maybe I should just build a pond. LOL
Going to force the water to drain AROUND the patio. It’s a rough draft so far. I think I will put river rock in the trench to prevent twisting an ankle or tripping into it.
I put quick dry cement on the part where you’ll step onto the walkway sprayed lightly with water. I wanted to somehow make it more stable - wouldn’t want it to slide out from under your feet.
Trimmed around the walkway and flower bed.
Not sure how I’m going to make straight bricks turn though.
After spraying the quick set cement.

We had the same problem with drainage especially since our house is over a hundred years old. We solved our problem with a French drain along with grating the area up against our foundation. I think you’re on the right track. I will send you some pictures. Maybe they will give you some more ideas.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
Do you have eaves on this side of the house? 1st step. That walk will slow water drainage. How much water? Is this a new issue? Too many questions. Is neighbor having same issue? Maybe you could share expenses and work. Think you need professional advice first.
I’m wondering if you need more stepping stones in the large gravel area. Have you considered having more stones, placing them where your footsteps fall naturally? You’ve done a lot of work! Be sure to use correct plants in that area so they’re successful. Nice!
