How can I clean my bathroom without damaging my septic tank?
I have always used bleach in my cleaning products. I just bought a home that has a septic tank and drain field. I was told not to use bleach or any antibacterial cleansers or soaps. How do I deep clean my bathrooms and toilets without killing the enzymes that break down the sewage paper particles in the septic tank?

Lysol makes a thick liquid toilet bowl cleaner. Hydrogen peroxide is an anti-bacterial. Actually, soap kills a lot of bad stuff, too. I also have a septic tank and drain field.

Vinegar (white vinegar and apple cider vinegar), Borax, OxiClean, and baking soda are some products that can be used to clean very well and be septic-system safe. Oxidized bleaches are also a less hazardous alternative to chlorine bleach.

Use vinegar.
This is a natural cleaner that will not affect your septic tank
Heat up 1 cup of white vinegar, mix in about 1/4 cup of Dawn Premium. Not the dollar store kind, because it is too thin. When mixed, pour into a spray bottle and fill with water. Shake. Spray down the grout and let it sit overnight. In the morning rinse. If you have stubborn stains, spray again. Use this mixture a few times a week. It will keep your grout and tiles clean. Also works wonders in the toilet bowl to keep hard water stains at bay. Oh you only have to heat the vinegar one time when you add the Dawn.
You can use Borax in place of bleach for a safer option.
Hi Tracy,
I use white vinegar all the time in my bathroom, in place of toxic chemicals. That should work for you since it's not a highly acidic product and it will be very diluted. Wishing you the best.

I use vinegar and it works great.
You could use bleach I had a septic for 10 years in Pennsylvania and had no problems
Mix one part muriatic acid to five parts water and slowly pour that solution into the toilet bowl. Add just enough to come up to the normal water level in the bowl. If you add any extra, it will go down the drain line toward your septic tank. Let the acid solution sit in the bowl for two to three hours
The septic tank should be vacuumed every 3-5 years for it to function properly
