DIY Painted Wood Blocks for Easter
Painted books have become very popular lately, but I just can’t bring myself to paint a book. That’s why I created these cute little painted wood blocks with words instead.
When I was a little girl my grandma used to sing the “Here Comes Peter Cottontail” song around Easter time.
We would walk barefoot through the grass, across the backyard and around my granddaddy’s big beautiful garden full of vegetables. She would carry a bucket of leftovers that we would throw over the fence to the neighbor’s two horses.
Now that you know the inspiration behind these painted wood blocks, let me show you how I made them.
My husband cut these little wood blocks from scraps that he had in his wood pile. They are the same size as Jinga blocks, and Dollar Tree has some similar for only $1.
I gave the wood blocks a coat of white paint. The paint I used was craft paint, nothing too expensive. I only did one coat because I wanted them to sand easily and have a more worn look.
Chalk paint will work, too, I just didn't have any on hand at the moment.
Set them aside and let them dry completely.
After the paint was completely dry I sanded along all the edges lightly.
Next I stamped the words onto the painted wood blocks.
The trick that helps me get the words on the blocks in somewhat of an organized order is to start backward. I write the words on a piece of paper first so I don’t misspell anything and have to start over. Then I start with the last letter of the word and add it to the end of the block, following each letter backward.
I set them aside to let them completely dry.
Then I wrapped a piece of twine around the edge of the blocks, tying a little bow.
That's it! I'm really happy with the way they turned out. I can also sit them in my little grapevine chair that I got from a thrift sale a few years ago.
They fit well on a small shelf, too, taking up less space than books.
