You could hang the headboard on the wall and put the bed in front of it. If your mattress is wider than the headboard, you can't attach a frame to it.

Does your bed have a foot board? Sometimes you can cut the foot board and add it to the sides of your headboard. We used about a third of the foot board for each side. We did that and looked great. Otherwise can you get some lumber and make extensions on your head board and stain the same color...OR paint it all the same color.

  • The easiest way would be to add pieces to each side. If possible, remove the posts, add those pieces, and then reattach them.

Problem is the frame attaches to the headboard. Adding extension posts to each side of the headboard. You would need to remove the brackets and install them on the extensions

    Hello Kay,

Maybe cut it in half and add a centre section? It could be a contrast or you could always add a new front over the whole lot, or maybe sell it as is and use the money to buy one the right size. Look on eBay! Best wishes

I think that cutting equal amounts from the main headboard as well as the footboard would allow you to still fit the mattress attachments. Attach a pretty, narrow piece of ironwork between the centers.

Re William's concern -it's accurate IF you want to continue with attaching the headboard to the frame. However, if your bed is up to a wall (as most are) you can hang the headboard on the wall (mine is actually just squished between the mattress and wall as it's got legs to the floor).

As far as making it wider, the best look would likely be to remove the posts, add wood on the edges to proper width and reattach the posts. But, this might not be possible with how the headboard is constructed, the tools you have, and your level of confidence to saw them off.

This leads to adding wood to the outsides of the posts to reach the necessary width. From what I can see in your pictures, it looks as though there is already wood beyond the posts and you can use that to guide your decisions for added wood. I'd take lots of measurements and pictures, go to speak to a woodworking expert for advice on what to purchase, how to cut and what stain will match your existing.

The best way to make the entire look cohesive when you're finished, in my opinion, would be to paint the entire things after the wood is added. Again my opinion, painting would update the headboard.

Good luck and have fun! 😎

btw - have you shopped for a full headboard at places with used furniture? I really think you can easily find something quite affordable that is the right size for you. I know I did when setting up my Mom's room at the Memory Care center. I found ours on LetGo.com locally. Paid just $35

  • Apart from boxing it in to make it bigger I dont think it will loo right in my opinion.

If you want it the right size, you will need to modify the existing headboard so it fits the bed as the others suggested. If mounting it is your concern, attaching it to the wall would be more practical. But, I doubt you would like the way it looks. I would replace or make a new one. Good luck and stay safe!

You realy can’t unless you add more wood behind it and make it larger and stain it the same color. Or atach it to the wall and paint the wall and the wood the same color and make a boarder around the headboard big enough to be a full
