Recycle Old Plastic Planters Into FAUX POTTERY!!
Here's how to transform your old plastics pots with some burlap and plaster.
- Burlap (I shared on the blog where I got my chunky burlap)
- Plaster of Paris
- Old Planter
- Brush + Paper Towels
- Hot glue
You can use any glue you'd like to attach the burlap. I used hot glue however I'm sure something like e6000 might be more durable. I should also mention this cordless ryobi glue gun I use is much more durable than the mini glue guns I've used.
Now you simply need to apply some plaster of paris onto the burlap. I applied it with a brush and worked in smaller sections. Before the plaster dried up I used a wet paper towel and rubbed off extra plaster to reveal the texture of the fabric. This give it a woven pottery effect.
NEVER WORKED WITH PLASTER?
I talk more about it on the blog here. It can be tricky to work with and hardens pretty quick. Also whatever you do never wash it down your drain or toilet. This stuff is super tough and cures rock solid.
Here's how my recycled planter looks now! Not sure if you noticed I actually cut about 1 inch of the planter off before apply the burlap. This gave the planter a cleaner look. The plaster dried solid and it's not flimsy at all. It feel like ceramic pottery.
Here's a close up on the bottom of the planter. I left the burlap frayed a little just to give it some character. I love how it turned out :) .
I hope this inspires you to recycle some of your old planters. Happy Crafting! Stay safe
