Ellen: this is a lovely, dramatic space! Here are some options for tall artwork (each print has various sizes!)

Hi Ellen, look through some of these ideas:

How cool! What about finding a beautiful tile and tiling that recessed area? It could even be peel and stick.
Check Kirklands and At Home. If you sign up with them you will get % off coupons.
You could paint it a contrasting color.
Add tile or glass beads to the space.
A series of prints could be placed verticaly in the space and have big impact.
What about a macrame hanging?
A tall mural would look spectacular there.
Fill the space in with wall paper and then add something to work as a frame around that.
If you like vintage and antiques, this would be a great spot for showcasing different pieces like an old sled, tobacco basket, vintage tools, golf clubs, etc.
Some different size mirrors with cool frames would look nice hung down the center.
Tall skinny macrame art would look nice.
Go to Kirkland or Home Goods they have some great large pieces of art at reasonable prices.
Choose an idea that has lots of dimension, shape, texture, and color.
Because the existing molding forms a 'frame' of sorts that is predominately vertical, I would seek designs that have strong horizontal lines to help balance the tall narrow shape.
You have three layers that could be painted slightly different shades of the wall color or different shades of an accent color or even a light metallic I just can't picture any kind of art looking like it belongs there. Otherwise or in addition to painting it I would probably add art on each side of it instead of in it.
I think a three panel vertical art piece might be interesting.
Potentially you could use a photograph split in three of something in nature or landscapes if that would meet your Decour aesthetics.
Buy all of the same frame and do something like a black and white print in each.
